Torres ruled out for Reds

Gerrard was an injury worry for the visit of Sunderland after limping off in the closing stages of Saturday's disappointing 2-0 defeat to Middlesbrough, but it has been confirmed the Reds skipper was only suffering from cramp.

Torres has failed to recover in time from the ankle injury he sustained in last week's UEFA Champions League win over Real Madrid.

Reds boss Rafa Benitez has confirmed he will be without Torres, Alvaro Arbeloa and Daniel Agger for the Sunderland game, but is hopeful Gerrard will be fit to start.

"Stevie was OK and will hopefully be available tomorrow," Benitez told the club's official website.

"Torres is not ready yet. We have to wait to see how he progresses but he won't be in the squad.

"Arbeloa has a problem with his hamstring. He's had the problem before. It could be another week." SkySports

No changes for Pompey

Portsmouth caretaker-manager Paul Hart is set to name a rare unchanged side for the FA Cup holders' Fratton Park meeting with Chelsea on Tuesday.

Hart will field the same line-up that started Portsmouth's 2-2 draw at relegation rivals Stoke nine days ago.

Midfielder Richard Hughes and goalkeeper Jamie Ashdown are back in training after recovering from injuries but will not be considered for selection.

Senegalese international Papa Bouba Diop remains sidelined with knee ligament damage.

Chelsea will again be without defender Ricardo Carvalho for the trip.

Carvalho will, however, feature for the reserves against Aston Villa on Monday night as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury, along with Michael Essien, who is on the brink of full fitness after long-term knee ligament problems.

Midfielder Deco (hamstring) is again doubtful.

Juventus Trio To Be Rested Against Lazio

Juventus claimed a 1-0 win over Napoli on Saturday and now are in the midst of preparations to face Lazio in the Coppa Italia on Tuesday.

According to Eurosport, the Bianconeri are expected to employ plenty of turnover for the match with three of their Italian contingent set to be rested against Delio Rossi's side: Alessandro Del Piero, Gianluigi Buffon, and Nicola Legrottaglie.

Coach Claudio Ranieri has used captain Del Piero in many games this term and believes the 34-year-old could use some much needed rest despite his beneficial influence on the field.

Meanwhile, Gianluigi Buffon will be rotated out of the line-up for Alex Manninger, who performed well in the Italian international's prolonged injury absence during the first half of the Serie A season.

Also absent will be key defender Nicola Legrottaglie. The former Chievo player is having one of his best campaigns as a footballer, but will not be risked as he is carrying a minor knee injury from a knock he suffered in the victory over Napoli on the weekend.

Juventus have not won the Coppa Italia since the 1994-95 season. Goal
