Robben special wins points for Real Madrid
Netherlands winger Arjen Robben was on target on Sunday when new-look Real Madrid scored a 1-0 victory over Villarreal that left them 12 points behind Primera Liga leaders Barcelona.
New coach Juande Ramos gave debuts to French midfield signing Lassana Diarra and Dutch striker Klass-Jan Huntelaar who cost a total of euros 40 million -- and was rewarded with his second league victory in charge.
Former Chelsea forward Robben left rivals trailing in his wake before firing a superb left-footed shot into the top corner after 31 minutes as Villarreal suffered a third straight defeat.
Real, who had defenders Pepe and Gabriel Heinze back after injury, could have led after 11 minutes when Robben's deflected shot hit the top of the bar.
And shortly before halftime Huntelaar should have claimed a debut goal but Diego Lopez foiled the Dutchman with a reflex save.
Huntelaar, still lacking full fitness, was substituted by Roysten Drenthe just 10 minutes into the second half.
Villarreal coach Manuel Pellegrini clearly had a few harsh words to say at halftime and his side were denied after 70 minutes when Giuseppe Rossi's header was pushed onto the bar by Casillas.
Former Bernabeu legend Hugo Sanchez, who won five consecutive league titles in Real colours from 1985 to 1990, had a great start with new club Almeria with his first match in charge ending in a 1-0 win over Real Betis.
Elsewhere Recreativo Huelva did their chances of staying up some good with a 3-1 win over Numancia on Sunday that lifted them out of the bottom three.CNN
Liverpool and Everton drawn in FA Cup
Merseyside rivals Liverpool and Everton have been drawn together in the fourth round of the English FA Cup with the tie set for Anfield on the weekend of 24-25 January.
That clash will come just a few days after the bitter rivals meet on the same ground in a televised Premier League encounter on Monday 19 January.
And it could be staged just hours after a scheduled 23 January court appearance by Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard who was charged with assault last week following an incident at a local nightclub.
There is already the prospect of one of the fourth round ties taking place on that Friday night.
Liverpool have already said that they will resist any change of fixture that will see them playing on the same day as Gerrard's court outing.
Sunday's draw produced a possible League Cup final rehearsal with Manchester United confirming an Old Trafford tie against Tottenham by winning 3-0 at Southampton on Sunday.
That means a Tottenham reunion for Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov who left the north London club at the start of the season having helped them lift the League Cup at Wembley earlier in the year.
Spurs face Burnley and United take on Derby over two legs in the semifinals of the League Cup in the weeks starting 5 and 19 January with the final at Wembley on Sunday 1 March.
Derby have landed an FA Cup clash at home to Championship rivals Nottingham Forest who scored the shock of the third round with a 3-0 win at Manchester City.
Kettering Town are at home to Premier League Fulham in the last-32 and fellow Conference club Torquay host Coventry City.
Hartlepool also have a lucrative home draw against West Ham while Arsenal must go to Cardiff City who beat them 1-0 in the 1927 final to take the cup back to Wales.
