Real Madrid hopes to snap skid against Valencia

Real Madrid hosts Valencia on Saturday trying to snap a three-game losing streak and enter La Liga's short winter break on a winning note.

The two-time defending La Liga champions trail Barcelona by 12 points entering the week but midfielder Arjen Robben believes the title is still up for grabs.

"Why not?" Robben said. "Anything can happen at this stage."

Real Madrid fired coach Bernd Schuster before the Barcelona match, and new boss Juande Ramos guided the team to a 3-0 victory over Zenit St. Petersburg in the Champions League before two late goals led to a 2-0 loss to Barca last weekend.

Real has already shown more life under Ramos, though. The Madrid club needs to pick up three points at the Bernabeu against second-place Valencia, however, to avoid possibly falling 15 points back.

"We are very excited about it. I think our training sessions show that we want to play," Robben said.

"We know we have to win this game and we are very motivated."

If Real can pick up three points Saturday, Villarreal could help the club out with a win over Barcelona on Sunday. After that, Real will start to unveil some reinforcements, including recent addition Klaas-Jan Huntelaar from Ajax.

But Real returns from the break against Villarreal, another match that could be a defining moment in the team's season.

"We have to focus on ourselves and improve. We shouldn't worry about what other teams do," Robben said.

Valencia is even with Sevilla on points entering this week's matches, and could close to within five points of Barcelona before the break with a win.

Valencia has a short turnaround from Wednesday's 2-2 tie against St. Etienne in the UEFA Cup, though.

Also Saturday, fifth-place Atletico Madrid visits Espanyol trying to remain in the title chase and solidify its grip on a European spot.

Barcelona carries a 14-match league unbeaten run into its game with Villarreal, and is unbeaten in 20 of its last 21 overall - its only loss was when it used a second-team lineup in a Champions League match when it already had first in its group secured.

Villarreal is the only other team in La Liga with two losses or fewer - Barca has one - but would slip more than 10 points behind with a loss on Sunday.

Also on Sunday, Mallorca hosts Sevilla, Numancia hosts Valladolid, Racing hosts Malaga, Osasuna hosts Getafe, Deportivo hosts Recreativo, Sporting Gijon hosts Almeria and Real Betis hosts Athletic Bilbao.
