Tottenham’s Gomes Could Recover In Time For Fulham Clash

Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes, who took a heavy knock on his face in last night’s 4-2 Carling Cup win against Liverpool, is set to under go a series of dental checks but could yet be fit in time for weekend’s Premiership clash against fellow Londoners Fulham at Craven Cottage.

The Brazilian goalkeeper was at fault for both goals conceded by Spurs, who otherwise put on an almost flawless performance to humble Rafa Benitez’s side and enter the quarter-finals, and was stretchered off the field in the second half after Reds full-back Philipp Degen took him out accidentally chasing a 50-50 ball with his foot making a heavy contact with the face of the former PSV Eindhoven man.

According to reports, Gomes will visit the club's dentist today to ascertain whether any international damage to his teeth was caused by the heavy impact that saw the Spurs number 1 needing oxygen as he was treated for six minutes on the pitch.

In case the 27-year-old Gomes does not recover for trip to west London, then 37-year-old former Real Madrid keeper Cesar Sanchez, who came on as replacement last night at White Hart Lane, could make his league debut for Harry Redknapp’s side.

Adriano Calls In Sick

Inter striker Adriano skipped yesterday’s training session at the Pinetina due to a mysterious illness.

L’Imperatore seemed to have rediscovered his old form this term after last season’s troubles that forced the Nerazzurri to send him out on loan to Brazilian outfit Sao Paulo.

But he fell back into old habits last month, turning up late to training after going clubbing around Milan and boss José Mourinho promptly froze him out of the squad.

The Brazilian international had even allegedly hinted at a possible return to his homeland in recent weeks, but this possibility was later ruled out by both his agent and the Beneamata directors.

However, the situation might change again, as the former Fiorentina ace has infuriated the Special One yesterday by calling in sick when all his teammates were already lined up on the pitch.

The Via Turati-based executives had tried to contact him on his cell phone to no avail when, out of the blue, the hitman called in: “I have a temperature, what should I do?” he asked, according to the Gazzetta dello Sport.

He was obviously advised to stay home, but the former Chelsea tactician was inevitably disappointed, and it remains to be seen whether this no-show will have repercussions for the trip to Palermo next weekend.

Adriano has not played a competitive game since the 0-0 draw with Genoa on October 26, but the ex-Porto trainer had hinted last Sunday that he would be called up for the match with the Sicilians. Goal

Maradona To Quit As Argentina Coach

The latest reports coming from Buenos Aires suggest that Diego Armando Maradona could be set to step down as coach of Argentina.

Just two weeks ago, Diego Maradona was named as the new coach of the Argentinean national side, following the resignation of the former coach Alfio Basile.

Maradona managed to see off many challengers, including the likes of Diego Simeone, Carlos Bianchi and Sergio Batista, to officially be named as the new head coach on October 29, 2008.

It was expected that arguably the greatest footballer of all time would commence his role as of December this year, however that may not be the case if the latest reports are true.

The Argentine broadcast media have began to speculate today on a possible surrender of Maradona as coach of the national side, following a heated discussion with AFA president Julio Grondona, in a meeting that was to decide who would assist him in his coaching role.

The 1986 World Player of the Year could resign as a result, following the disagreements that took place earlier today. Maradona had hoped to bring in Oscar Ruggeri as his number two, however Grandona wanted nothing of it, which consequently caused further problems between the two men. Goal
